I decided to move to Costa Rica a couple of years ago because it has an ideal climate, is an exceptional tourism destination, popular retirement option, has no army (I promise not to talk politics here!), and is the world leader in eco-tourism. It is a country of incredible natural beauty, friendly, well-educated people, and affordable prices. Costa Rica occupies 0.03% of the planet’s surface but contains 6% of the world’s bio-diversity. An incredible 25% of the country’s territory is protected as national parks or bio-reserves. The landscape is home to 1000 varieties of orchids, 845 varieties of birds, and many jaguars, pumas, agouties, green turtles, sloths, crocodiles, and monkeys.
In addition to Costa Rica’s reputation as a tropical paradise the country was, until recently. a well-kept secret among those seeking affordable cosmetic and medical procedures. Costa Rica is now known for its state-of-the-art medical facilities and highly skilled, world-trained physicians. Medical tourism options include all dental procedures, Lasik eye surgery, and plastic and reconstructive surgery. Costs are typically one-third to one-half of the average costs in the USA.
I also felt that preparing a tourism destination that would be comfortable for people with mobility impairments—and take as much of the guess work out of their trip planning as possible—would be a valuable and satisfying mission. With this in mind, I have built a destination that is both beautiful AND comfortable for people traveling in and out of a chair. Some of the slopes between the houses will require assistance, but all the built environment is well-designed and can be comfortably manuvered in a chair without assistance. There is also a 15-passenger van with a secure wheelchair station and entrance ramp available to our guests.
I come from a liberal religious background, enjoy meeting new people, am not afraid to close my eyes and jump into new things. Generally, this has served me well in life. I feel extremely blessed at this stage of my life (I am fast approaching my mid-50’s) and very fortunate to have so much to give back to my fellow travelers. I have lots more to learn (including improving my Spanish!), but I always consider myself a work in progress. The hardest thing about being here is leaving all my friends and family. And yet, what better destination for a vacation….
So come on down and visit a spell! (I spent lots of years living in the South—there’s plenty of sweet tea).
Whether you want to simply relax, check out the spectacular beauty (both the landscape AND the people!), save a bundle of $$$ on medical needs, or hit the city action, we’ve been waiting for you.
